The current Highlands of Bedok merely hint at the undulating elevation and terrain that used to dominate the area before the levelling of the land began in the 1960s for housing development. Bedok Rise used to be the highest peak in the area, from which residents could survey the nearby areas to spot and react to fires and other incidents.

‘Parcel B’, a 24,394 sqm plot of forested land at the corner of Bedok South Ave 3 and New Upper Changi Rd, got its name when it was triggered for sale on 7th January 2016 for the construction of a condominium.

Built to Shape Your Body (Parcel B) documents the changes experienced by this plot of land during March and April 2017, as the construction of the condominium enters its showroom phase. As a follow up to Mother and Child, Divided (Parcel B) that documented the excavation works in November 2016, Built to Shape Your Body (Parcel B) extends the exploration of the estranged relationship between man and nature.

Owing its namesake to a tagline from the condominium project’s advertisements, this body of work criticizes the arrogance of man towards his apparent control over nature through the juxtaposition of said advertisements, which promise better living through its construction, with the realities of the deforestation experienced by Parcel B.
